Action-packed ‘Music in the Mountains’ weekend at Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School

'Music in the Mountains' sees people from all over the country and even abroad attending, with between 5000 and 6000 festival-goers in attendance this year

It’s an action-packed weekend for the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir, as they are currently hosting the ‘Music in the Mountains’ festival.

The proceedings started on Friday (April 27) and will continue until tomorrow (Monday, April 30).

‘Music in the Mountains’ sees people from all over the country and even abroad attending, with between 5000 and 6000 festival-goers in attendance this year.

A journalist from the Ladysmith Gazette attended the event and got to interview some amazing key members of the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir and families that travel across the world just to see their children perform at events.

Chieko Ellie Suzuki, from Japan, has been attending ‘Music in the Mountains’ for 29 years. Yes, that’s right, she travels all the way from Japan just to come out to the Drakensberg to attend this festival.

And if you thought only children from South Africa attend the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School, you might want to think again.

Noah Coffey (Grade 9) and Caleb Coffey (Grade 6) have come all the way from Australia just to attend the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School.

Speaking to their parents, Michael and Saskia, they said that January this year was the last time they saw their children up until this weekend, and to see them performing on stage was just amazing.

They added that the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School has played an integral part in developing their children and building their character.

The time difference between South Africa and Australia also makes talking to their children difficult. Yet they can rest easy in the knowledge that their children are thoroughly enjoying their schooling at Drakies.
