District municipality accelerates Covid-19 awareness

Salons, shops, the post office and other places were also visited where pamphlets were distributed and businesses encouraged to sanitize surfaces and follow Covid-19 regulations

In an effort to intensify Covid-19 awareness the District Command Council partnered with the local municipality to conduct visits on July 24.

uThukela District Mayor and Chairperson of the District Command Council Cllr Siphiwe Mazibuko accompanied by various stakeholders visited different schools under Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality.

The first stop was at Bhekuzulu Primary School and then followed by a visit to Mahlubi High School.

The purpose of the visits was to educate learners about the importance of adhering to COVID-19 protocols and also to donate with sanitary packs. Mayor Mazibuko encouraged learners to continue studying at home while on a winter break. He told them to always practise safety protocols as mandated by government.

“You must always put your safety first even if you are at home, wash your hands regularly with soap or using sanitizers, wear your masks and keep social distancing as required. Avoid touching face, eyes and nose all the time,” the Mayor said.

The second awareness session was held at the taxi rank in Alexandra Street where the team was joined by ward councillor Edith Lite, Environmental Health team and Estcourt & District Taxi Association Chairperson Mr Mabaso. The Mayor also encouraged the public to follow Covid-19 regulations to stay safe by wearing masks, avoiding crowded places and unnecessary gatherings, and to stay at home when there is nothing important to do in town.

The Mayor pleaded with the community to keep safe and maintain social distancing as the district is facing an increase in the number of cases.
