NEWCASTLE – Three members of Northern Natal JKA received training from world class Japanese instructor, Okuma Koichiro Sensei recently.

Okuma Sensei is a sixth Dan from the JKA World Federation.

Johan Swart, Angus Burns and Charles Kemp were invited to his seminar in Johannesburg, which focused on hip movement and style.

“The class focused mainly on contraction and expansion, and the importance of using one’s hips in karate movements. This generates power and vibration without stepping forward,” said Sensei Johan.

The three locals and their peers were taught different combinations and techniques, in addition to kata which had to be perfectly mirrored.

They were taught that with each kata there are different ideas at work.

“It is always an honour and privilege to train with someone like Okuma Sensei, and the knowledge obtained from seminars such as these is always welcomed by instructors and karateka alike. This knowledge makes for stronger and better karate, both in body and mind.”

After a very successful year, not without its bumps and bruises, the JKA NKZN year-end function, grading and prize giving takes place on November 26, at the Arbor Park Recreation Centre.

This will mark the end of the year’s activities.

“We wish all our karateka and their families a safe and happy festive season, and look forward to seeing them all again in the new year.”
