A warmer winter for rural Bergville residents

The Al-Imdaad Foundation entered the second half of the year continuing its Operation Winter Warmth blanket drive with distributions to rural communities in isolated areas.

On July 1, 2020, the foundation partnered with the Okhahlamba Local Municipality, the Department of Social Development, Spiritual Chords, and the Islamic Medical Association (IMA) to spread warmth to a deeply rural community living in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains.

The Mayor of the Okhahlamba Municipality, Councillor Mlungisi Ndlangisa, who was the Operation Sukuma Sakhe champion for the intervention, was in attendance.

The Al-Imdaad Foundation team distributed blankets, hygiene kits, sanitizers, facemasks and walking sticks to elderly members of the community. The sewn fabric facemasks were contributed by IMA and the blankets were sponsored by Spiritual Chords.

Al-Imdaad Foundation special projects co-ordinator, Mr Abed Karrim thanked all officials, Operation Sukuma Sakhe and partners who contributed to the programme.

During the distributions, the team met Gogo Nkala who had recently fallen and hurt her leg. Gogo Nkala was making use of a thin stick as a walking stick.

Mr Karrim was concerned, and that vulnerable senior citizens in rural areas were walking with only ‘twigs’ to support them.

“It is not acceptable”, said Mr Karrim.

He went on to explain that it was important to provide proper walking sticks to senior citizens in needy rural communities.
