Escalating crime prompts peace talks

Brigadier Bantham identified some areas that need to be attended to and improved, which will help the police and the community fight crime together

A joint approach to tackle the escalating levels of crime was discussed at a crime awareness meeting between municipal and police officials on May 26.

uThukela Cluster Commander Brigadier Francis Bantham arranged a meeting with Inkosi Langalibalele Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize, which was held in Council Chambers at 11am.

The aim of the meeting, which was also attended by several police and municipal officials, was to alert all present about the increasing crime within the municipal boundary.

Of particular concern were areas like Amangwe (Loskop), Estcourt, Ntabamhlophe and Weenen. Brigadier Bantham specifically made mention of the nine firearms recovered and 10 arrests made in Loskop last week. Bags of dagga worth thousands of rands were also seized. Police believe that the suspects may be linked to a spate of murders in the area.

“During the meeting, she made it clear that she is not going to sit down and keep quiet while innocent souls are suffering,” said police spokesperson Captain Bongani Nyathi.

Brigadier Bantham also identified some areas that need to be attended to and improved, which will help the police and the community fight crime together. She told the officials present that, with the assistance of Brigadier FB Alexander, she believes that crime within the municipality will be stopped soon.

Brigadier Bantham also promised to come out with her officers and participate in crime awareness after the Covid-19 lockdown. She further expressed interest in meeting with all stakeholders, like the amakhosi and izinduna from the Uthukela Cluster. Municipal Manager Mkhize thanked police officials for their dedication and pledged his commitment on behalf of the municipality to forge forward in the fight against crime.
