Bubbling sewage raises a stink

This was the first of numerous sewage complaints reported in the week.

PARADISE – Overflowing sewage gushed into storm water drains on Friday.

An open piece of land bordered by Murchison and Hardwick streets, near a substation and houses, was flooded by the effluent which bubbled out of what appeared to be a burst pipe.

This was the first of numerous sewage complaints reported in the week.

Paradise residents came forward to report a manhole gushing effluent and sodden toilet paper leaking onto properties around Lacerta Place.

At the time of going to print, the municipality had not dispatched staff.

Murchison Street resident, Zanele Simelane said the sewage first began to seep out near her home after heavy rainfall, and continued to spew out in the days to follow.

“It stinks so badly I can barely breathe.”

The sewage eventually flooded neighbouring yards, forcing Ms Simelane to trudge through the effluent barefoot and stink of sewage the entire day.

She reported the matter to the municipality and workers were dispatched.

However, later on Friday afternoon Ms Simelane contacted the Advertiser and said the problem had still not been resolved.

“When the rains come again this problem is going to be worse.”

The municipal call centre stated both matters had been closed on the system, meaning the problem was attended to and paperwork was to be submitted.

What caused these problems remains to be seen.
