The Joint Operations Committee (JOC) on Covid-19 in AbaQulusi celebrated the recovery of two patients who tested positive for the coronavirus a few weeks ago.
The JOC feels this indicates the great strides AbaQulusi and Zululand are making in the fight against Covid-19.
As at April 30, the JOC had visited a total of 4810 households and 16,785 people were screened. Clinics screened 5357 patients, six of whom were suspected cases. Vryheid District Hospital (VDH) screened a total of 3158 walk-in patients and in total, 59 cases were referred for testing.
The results for the 59 tested have not been confirmed.
VHD will embark on the testing of all front-line workers, commencing with the JOC, followed by hospital workers and then all government departments to ensure that they do not transfer the virus to the community while conducting Covid-19 activities.

Meanwhile, Acting Mayor Mncedisi Maphisa squashed allegations that a family in Vryheid had tested positive for coronavirus, following an “incorrect” report from one of the national radio stations.
Maphisa clarified that the report did not say there was a family that had tested positive, but requested all Vryheid citizens to assist families in dire need of food due to being unable to make a living during the lockdown. “As things stand, we had two positive cases in Zululand, of which both have recovered. The report was merely to ask for assistance from other members of the community to lend a hand to those families affected by the lockdown,” explained Maphisa. In the report, Maphisa is heard saying, “We request people who are willing and are able to assist those families in need, not just business people, but also individuals who can be able to assist. Our JOC meeting is where we identify areas of great need and work around that. So we urge those who will be willing to donate to either bring the donations to our municipal offices or where we meet as a command centre”.
