Update: Man trapped inside silo for 10 hours in Winterton, buried in grain up till his neck
It is believed that the man was working inside the silo, trying to move the grain that was not flowing smoothly into the motor
A man, believed to be in his 30s, was hospitalised on Sunday (March 11) after being trapped inside a grain silo for about 10 hours in Winterton.
ER24 paramedics, along with Provincial Fire and other services, arrived in the early hours of the morning to find a man trapped chest-deep in grain.
Several men had climbed inside the silo and had begun to remove the large amount of grain.
Provincial Services utilised various rescue / cutting equipment and the jaws of life to cut a large hole in the bottom of the silo, allowing more access for grain to be removed.
Glen Preston from Med-Evac said “we were activated from Margate to Winterton, where we landed our helicopter at the bowling club in town”.
It is believed that the man was working inside the silo, trying to move the grain that was not flowing smoothly into the motor in the middle of the silo. This is when the man started experiencing difficulties and was pushed by the moving grain under the motor.
He was trapped neck-high in grain, with his legs under the motor.

After about 10 hours, the man was finally freed from the silo.
The man was treated for his injuries and provided with pain-relief medication before being airlifted by a Med-Evac helicopter to Mediclinic Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.
