Local cyclists take over 94.7

Newcastillians kept the wheels rolling at the 94.7 at the weekend.

Newcastle had a good showing at the 94.7 Cycle Challenge on Sunday.

A large contingent of local cyclists cut a 94 kilometre route through Johannesburg, en route to the finish line in Fourways.

The general consensus – an amazing experience.

Among locals who competed at the 94.7 was Johan Pieters, who spoke highly of the race as one of the most difficult in South Africa.

Mr Pieters already has a number of Argus finishes to his name.

“This year the Kyalami Race Course was part of the route, which was awesome.”

Johan Roberts completed his race in a staggering two hours, 51 minutes, and ended tied for position 1527 out of over 20 000 entrants.

This is fifth 94.7 to date, and he has more in the tank.

“I’m going for 10 and even more. I won’t ever stop,” he enthused.

Another strong finisher was Pieter de Bruyn, a 64-year-old who completed his 14th 94.7 in three hours and 12 minutes.

He started earlier than the main pack, and enjoyed mostly open road.

“It went well; the weather was nice with only a bit of wind and heat towards the end.”

The Newcastle Wheelers Cycling Club boasted a large group of cyclists at the 94.7 too – congratulations to all competitors and entrants!

The full set of Wheelers results from the 94.7 can be found in this week’s Advertiser.
