Another fire disaster strikes

Endumeni Disaster Manager says there is a need to educate people living in farms about fire outbreaks.

The Endumeni Disaster Management team will again embark on an active awareness campaign against incidents of fire. Disaster Manager Bonginkosi Zulu made this statement after an accidental fire last week, where a shack on a farm was destroyed as a result of an imbawula (brazier). Mr Zulu said there is a need to create awareness in the area, since people are coming in their numbers to live on the farm.
One of the residents told the Courier that she paid R1 000 to live on the farm. There is no clean water, electricity or toilets. Lindiwe Mnguni, whose shack was destroyed in the fire, told the Courier that she was out looking for a job when the incident happened. She said she survives through part-time work, and her boyfriend, Solomon Hlatshwayo (who is unemployed) is in hospital for treatment. They stay with four children, all of whom are registered for grants.
Another fire incident was reported in Lindelani, where a home was burnt down on September 9.
According to the owner of the house, Nonhlanhla Dlamini, social workers were reported to but did not attend to the report. Mrs Dlamini said they lost everything, including identity documents.
Lindiwe and Solomon thanked the social workers, the Disaster Management team and Umzinyathi District Municipality for their excellent work.
