Locals cautiously optimistic ahead of development plan

A series of developments projects is on the cards for Estcourt

Development has finally come to Estcourt through the roll-out of the Inkululeko Development Project. Spearheaded by the premier’s office, this is an integrated multi-purpose and multi-sectoral project.

It includes construction of high-quality education centres, health services, modern roads and libraries, clean running water, sustainable livelihoods, as well as community centres for vulnerable children and orphans.

The study areas were identified as areas that needed intervention under the programme, which will look at poverty alleviation, infrastructure development and employment creation.
The attendance improved on Monday (February 3) night compared to the last meeting called, as two presentations got underway at the Estcourt Town Hall.

The meeting was held to introduce the project, enlighten attendees on the background and purpose, and then to discuss the current phase and receive input.

After making a few opening remarks, Councillor Edith Lite introduced Sifiso Zondo, who represents TPS Development Projects. Mr Zondo issued out maps which marked the Estcourt study area, including a buffer area which the projects will focus on. This presentation was met with appreciation, gratitude and great excitement, but a few could not help but ask the obvious.

“If we cannot maintain what we already have, what is the point of new developments?” one resident was heard saying.

This was met with a call for order from other attendees, while some shared the same sentiment.

It was also of concern to the stakeholders in attendance that the mayor, municipal manager and director of infrastructure from the local municipality were not in attendance. Cllr Lite addressed these concerns, saying that these role players are aware and will be present next time, adding that they were summoned to Treasury to address a matter, which will also in turn assist Estcourt.

Mr Zondo took note of all the requests and development ideas, and what should be made top priority. It was then jointly agreed that a forum be elected with an equal representation of role players to stay in communication with Mr Zondo to follow up on progress and also ensure that the report is a true reflection of the meeting, to name a few.

It was urged that when these projects roll out, locals are given first preference for jobs if the requirements are met. Locals also expressed how it pained them to see the once ‘Gem of the Midlands’ now go backwards.

They then all pledged their full support to spread the word to draw in people with an invested interest in the town.

Another meeting will be held on March 2 at 5pm for 5.30pm at the Estcourt Town Hall to have a look at the report put together before it is approved by council and so forth. Environmental Assessment Practitioner Nathi Ncube then gave his presentation on the upgrade of the Umtshezi Regional Bulk Water Supply Project and took questions.

The Draft Basic Assessment report will be available at local libraries and the municipality to review for the next 30 days. If you are a landowner and the current water lines run through your property, kindly collect a consent form from the Estcourt News office or contact the municipality / Ward 10 or Ward 17 councillors.
