Basic service delivery issues ‘fall on deaf ears’

Ratepayers plead for basic service delivery

A new year, but the same old concerns.  Just about every local ratepayer can attest to this.  In the past week, two in particular have had just about enough of poor service delivery.

They say that ‘poor’ has become an understatement, as lack of service delivery is visible in streets like Alfred, Phillips and Keate Street.  For fear of victimisation, both men asked not to be named.

One questioned firmly, “Where is ratepayers’ money going?”  His main concerns are overflowing bins, dirt strewn around and water pollution.

“I have been residing within the area for the past 15 years and for all that time, there has been no change,” he said with frustration.

The man added that letters to the municipality to address these problems fall on deaf ears.

“The stream near the Islamic butchery is full of dirt. How is it possible to live in such appalling conditions? This is the reason we have drains blocked in the rank,” he continued.

The second man raised his concern for the image and state of the area outside the Keate Street cemetery.

“We are already faced with a safety challenge when wanting to visit the cemetery. To add to this, cars are being repaired right there. Dirt is left behind and oil stains create an eyesore,” he said.

He urges the traffic department or any other authority to take the necessary action immediately.
