Cllr Mkhize and three others have been charged with defeating the ends of justice. The case was postponed to December 12 for further investigation.

Cllr Mkhize made his first court appearance on November 21, when the case was postponed to tend to legal representation requirements.

It is alleged that the case stems from reports of an assassination attempt on Mr Mkhize’s life on September 15 in Rensburgdrift.

According to the IFP leader, he was travelling alone in his Toyota Fortuner from Weenen to Estcourt when he allegedly came under fire from unknown gunmen who were hiding in nearby bushes.

Cllr Mkhize said a colleague who was travelling in a second vehicle returned fire and this “disturbed” the gunmen. A case of attempted murder was immediately opened at Estcourt police station after the alleged assassination attempt.
