Cricket scores deliver stark contrast across the board

Cricket action over the weekend saw a stark contrast between scores in all three matches that took place on Saturday and Sunday.

At Cecil Emmett Park, Mondlo faced the Wicket Wasps in a T20 match on Saturday afternoon.

Wasps won the toss and elected to bat. A half century by opener, Adriaan Kruger set the precedent and the Wasps went on to put a whopping 202/5 on the board in their twenty overs. Thokozani Zondo and Siyadumisa Msibi took two wickets each and the wicket of Adriaan Kruger fell to Siyabonga Madela in a run out.

Mondlo took bat in hand next, looking to chase down the Wasps’ total, but were unable to take the sting out of their opponents as they faced the onslaught of their bowling attack. Msizi Khumalo was the only Mondlo batsman to reach double figures for the team as he smacked the ball for four runs three times in the 16 deliveries that he faced before he was caught and bowled by Karl-Johann Ewert.

Mondlo were restricted to a mere 46 runs, all out, in 16.3 overs. Karl-Johann Ewert took three wickets for the Wasps, Jaco Davel and Ruan Senekal took two wickets apiece and Andrew Brooks, Shane Pennington and John Bevan each took one. Wicket Wasps won by 156 runs.

With Ruan Senekal at the non-striker’s end for the Wicket Wasps, Mandla Khanyile bowls for Mondlo.

Sunday saw Mr X face Pak CC at Cecil Emmett Park in a 50 over Limited Overs match.

Pak CC won the toss and sent Mr X in to bat first.

Half centuries from Clifford Dougherty (61) and Matthew Stride (56) set the tone for the match and Mr X racked up a total of 215 all out in 48.4 overs. Imran Anwar took five wickets for 39 runs in his allotted ten overs and Kashif Hussain and Arshad Muhammad took three and two wickets respectively.

Pak CC went in to bat and were restricted to only 62 runs, all out, within 15.4 overs. Kashif Hussain was the only Pak CC batsman to reach double figures, putting 16 runs on the board for his team, undefeated. Llewllyn Schwab took five wickets for 17 runs, while Devin Aspden and Clifford Dougherty took four and one respectively. Mr X won by 153 runs.

Meanwhile, in Dumbe, the home team won the toss and elected to bat first in the 50 over Limited Overs match against the Gladiators.

Opening batsman, Marcel Hinze, put up a monumental score of 187 before being caught and bowled by Wessel Vorster. Juan Freyer, who came in at second, scored 69 runs for Dumbe before being bowled by Jaques Sander. The hosts were able to rack up a massive 403/5 in their 50 over innings. Wessel Vorster took two wickets and Jaques Sander, Corné Bosman and Tristan Aitken took a wicket each for the Gladiators.

The Vryheid side took to the pitch next, bat in hand, with Dumbe’s imposing total hanging over them like an ominous dark cloud.

Wessel Vorster opened for the Gladiators and reached 17 runs off 45 balls, including four fours before losing his wicket to Leon Solms. The only other Gladiator to reach double figures was Cameran Aitken, who managed to put 25 runs on the board, including five fours, undefeated.

Leon Solms was the top wicket taker for Dumbe with three wickets taken for only nine runs in his four overs. Juan Freyer and MJ Pollard each took a wicket for Dumbe. In the end, the Gladiators were unable to reach the colossal target set by Dumbe and were all out for 111. Dumbe won by 292 runs.
