Phytides family joins Greek delegation on pilgrimage route from Durban to Glencoe

"The pilgrimage gave joy to young and old alike and the opportunity as the song of Savvopoulos D. refers for "Greek communities to build another galaxy" with joy and awe!," concluded Father Athanasios.

Terry Worley, Editor of the Northern Natal Courier and the Vryheid Herald wrote, “A large delegation representing the Greek community of the greater Durban area made a pilgrimage to the Church of St. Kiriaki in Glencoe.

“There, they met up with congregants, representing the Greek community from the Endumeni area and other towns, including Vryheid, to attend the Orthodox Matins and Divine Liturgy and Artoklasia sequence on Sunday morning. The service was conducted by Father Athanasios Poyiadjis of Durban.

The St Kiriaki Church on Black Street, Glencoe, was built in 1902 as a Catholic Church. When the Diocese built a bigger Church in Dundee, the Glencoe church fell into disuse.

In 1992, the Church was bought by the local Greek community, pioneered by two local families, Efstratios (Charlie) Adalis and Andreas (Andrew) Meli. The building was renovated and, following the planned procedures, wishes and blessings of the Orthodox Church, and the supervision of the Metropolitan of the district and Archbishopric of Good Hope, of Cape Town, Sergius Kykkotis, the church was converted into an Orthodox church through the generous support of the Greeks of the region. The Church is dedicated to the memory of Kiki Adalis who died in a car crash 1990. The day concluded with a bountiful lunch offered to the visitors.”

“The pilgrimage gave joy to young and old alike and the opportunity as the song of Savvopoulos D. refers for “Greek communities to build another galaxy” with joy and awe!,” concluded Father Athanasios.

Local business owner and family man, Michael Phytides was among the delegation and took his family along on the pilgrimage to the church where his youngest son, Louis, was baptised just last year.

“The Greek Orthodox faith is very important to us as a family,” he explained. “Both of my sons are baptised Greek Orthodox and we look forward to attending these services as often as we can.”
