Stepping in to save the Estcourt Animal Shelter
A big barking donation of pet food warmly welcomed
When Justin Mentel and Ryan Scully pledged support to the Estcourt Animal Shelter, they might not have realised just how much this would mean.

The friends from Durban North are avid animal lovers and 2019 is the second year they have collected and donated thousands of kilograms of dog and cat food to organisations in need.
Last Tuesday, the pair visited the Estcourt Animal Shelter with a massive donation of food. Committee members David and Brenda McFie were in awe as bag upon bag of cat and dog food, as well as a pile of blankets, were offloaded from a trailer and vehicle.
“I didn’t think something like this would have come true!” exclaimed Mr McFie.
The friends explain that they have committed to helping animal organisations in need with food and this year, through news from friends and family, they were alerted to the plight of the Estcourt Animal Shelter that had two weeks of reserve food.
Messrs Mentel and Scully donated 63 8kg bags of dog food and 28 4kg bags of cat food to the animal shelter. They explained that they have received generous backing from other businesses, who either donated a bulk supply or matched each of their purchases.
The animal shelter is one of four organisations that will benefit.
“We wanted to identify places that are in dire need, because we know that the cost of food is high,” said Mr Mentel.
Mrs McFie said that the donation of 600kg of cat and dog food would suffice for three months.
“We would like to say a massive thank you to Justin and Ryan for this donation. It is amazing,” said Mr McFie.
After offloading the food and blankets, the friends visited every cat and dog at the shelter and spent time petting and talking to each one. This gesture was thoroughly loved by the animals.
