Al Jama-ah PR councillor shot at en route to a council meeting last week

The recent spate of attacks on political leaders has raised fears, and councillors are demanding tighter security.

In the most recent alleged assassination attempt, Al Jama-ah Party proportional representation (PR) councillor Kabelo Ashly Nthekiso (22) escaped a hail of bullets last Wednesday.

Mr Nthekiso (who was unavailable to speak to the Estcourt News) sped away from the scene. His assistant, Mr Andile, said they fled for their lives, travelling to Durban to keep a safe distance from the gunmen.

The alleged shooting on Mr Nthekiso brings the total to four attacks on political leaders since mid-August.

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) proportional representation councillor Mthembeni Majola was killed on August 16 while travelling in his car near Estcourt Hospital.

Okhahlamba Local Municipality Speaker Sthembiso Zulu dodged an alleged assassination attempt on his
life in August when occupants of a bakkie fired 11 shots at his vehicle while he was returning
home from work commitments. He escaped unharmed.

IFP uThukela District Chairperson Mbuzeleni Mkhize survived an alleged assassination attempt on September 15. Unknown men who were allegedly hiding in a bush in Rensburgdrift opened fire on his vehicle. He too escaped unscathed.
