Speedsters drop the clutch at Dundee drag race event

With a total of over R24 000 in prize money to race for, drivers from around KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng were keen to put the pedal to the metal and the 'NV' speedsters were no exception.

Endumeni Motorsport Club hosted the Street 2 Strip Drag Challenge in Dundee on Sunday, and local racers got in on the action.

“Vryheid was well represented by the old school ‘Green Lantern’ Datsun of Luwin Freeman of Vryheid, which out-muscled a couple of Mustangs on its way to the final,” wrote sister publication, the Northern Natal Courier. “He won his class but was knocked out of the overall final by a new school Golf, driven by Rivash Chunder of Dundee…”

In his old school Datsun, Luwin Freeman defeated a Mustang to advance to the finals.

With a total of over R24 000 in prize money to race for, drivers from around KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng were keen to put the pedal to the metal and the ‘NV’ speedsters were no exception.
Freeman was among the top racers who accelerated their way to the finals.
The high-octane racing action at the Dundee Airfield previously used time as a way of separating ‘the men from the boys’, but this latest tournament was simply about who could get their vehicle across the line at the end of the 200-metre track first – no timing, no trophies, just R24k to battle for.
The vehicles were divided into classes such as rear- and front-wheel drive; turbo and normally aspirated.

“After the call-outs were done, the elimination rounds progressed with lots of excitement,” stated the Courier.
“Event director, Kas Moodley, was very precise in ensuring drivers did not roll forward before the starting lights flashed and several competitors had to be eliminated. This was all taken in good grace and in the end, only five drivers remained: Rivash, Ebrahim, Alan, Shalen and Luwin. These five went up against each other to determine the overall winner, regardless of class.”

Freeman’s ‘Green Lantern’ went up against the fearsome all-wheel drive of Rivash’s Golf and was unable to repeat the glorious dominance it had displayed in the previous rounds.
Rivash would go on take out Alan Uchee’s Fiat in the final.
Shaiel Chunder of the Endumeni Motorsport Club expressed his thanks to all those who had come out to support the event from far and wide.
