“We had 149 clients in the safe house from April 1 to March 2015, while this year we have already had 102 clients from March until now. Unfortunately, the crime is increasing and becoming more violent,” said Director of Newcastle Crisis Centre, Mary Dobbie, at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting on August 31.

Dedicated to addressing social ills, staff of the crisis centre not only supported the community, but also informed and liaised with all relevant departments regarding social ills which plagued the town as a whole, she said.

“Nomvello Buthelezi (housemother) and I are attending meetings at war rooms, drug action committees, SANCA, the Victim Empowerment Forum, and are creating awareness of the services we offer to the Amajuba District and surrounding areas.”

Mrs Dobbie thanked all sponsors who contributed to the centre to enable it to help those in need.

Chairperson of the crisis centre committee, Morris Gajoo, encouraged the community to support organisations such as the crisis centre.

“Domestic violence does not discriminate, therefore our clients are from all demographics in terms of age, race and educational backgrounds. We assist any woman who meets the criteria for emergency intervention and assistance due to domestic violence or sexual assault.”

The escalating number of mothers and children finding refuge from violence at the crisis centre, means more funds are needed.

According to the treasurer’s report, the organisation was running smoothly, albeit at a slight deficit.

The AGM was concluded with the election of the 2017 committee.
