Vendor tries to make cents of life

Priska has been at her spot for 15 years.

For Priska Mtiyakho (46), her humble business is the difference between feeding her family and starvation.

The street vendor, who operates her little business from the corner of Utrecht and West streets, has been in business for 15 years, as a means to provide for her four children single-handedly.
Her sons, Xolani (26) and Thabiso (23) attended school until Grade 11 but can find no work.

Her two daughters, Slindile (15) – who has a two-year-old child of her own – and Lindy (12) are still in school, but having no second income to rely on makes it difficult for the family to thrive.
Priska’s husband passed away in 2013, and every cent she earns goes towards raising her family.

“Lots of children and people in the schools and college buy from me. It keeps me busy. I have always wanted to sell things to people and always dreamed of owning my own business,” she concluded.
