Muslim healthcare professionals from Estcourt and Ladysmith, together with learners from the Islamic Educational Centre (IEC) in Ladysmith, volunteer their free services to the community at these outreach programmes, which are held throughout the year at various venues where there is a need.

The Ladysmith members travelled 70km to the school to assist, along with their Estcourt counterparts. Over 250 patients were seen on the day. IMA nurses, with the assistance from nurses at the local clinic, offered blood pressure and blood glucose testing.

Four optometrists were on hand to provide eye tests, spectacles, medication and referrals to hospital. IMA dentists provided basic dentistry services and performed extractions in a region where there are no dental services, much to the delight of patients with painful teeth.

An audiology team, headed by Dr Sardiwalla and Sameera Asmal, conducted 35 hearing tests. A startling statistic was that 70% of those tested had a hearing abnormality, necessitating referral for further management.

The Al-Imdaad Foundation generously came on board and provided hygiene packs, oranges and walking sticks to those who needed them.

Bottles of water, supplied by Nazeeha Asmal of Nazpre, were distributed by IEC learners to patients waiting in the sun. The learners also helped with other duties.

Sincerest thanks to Bonokuhle High School principal Mr Sithole and his dedicated educators, Mrs Mngadi and Mr Mkhize, who assisted with the venue and seating. Many thanks for giving up your free time.

Thanks also to Sister Ganes of the Health Department and her staff for their assistance.  Not forgetting Al-Imdaad for their generous contribution and time.

Ward Councillor Noah Dlangalala was instrumental in promoting the event in the community and making it a success, so thank you for your help.
