Vehicles destroyed in fierce fire

The first fire engine broke down on the way to the fire.

Fanned by a strong wind, a fierce fire gutted two vehicles parked at the home of popular spin-driver and businessman, Boxer, on the top of Mpati on Friday afternoon.

The fire, sparked by a Eskom pole that fell down in the wind, spread rapidly through the thick veld grass and into where the cars – all belonging to customers of Boxer – were parked.

Workers at AFT, across the road from the house, went to investigate and realised that the electrical cable had caused the fire.  They immediately alerted the fire brigade and Boxer was also alerted.

Employees and friends –including fellow spinners Preshu Singh – of Boxer rushed to assist and tried to contain the blaze.

The first fire engine broke down near the testing grounds.

By then, two vehicles had already been destroyed.  A third, a bakkie, was saved on the brink when a second fire engine finally arrived.

Firemen immediately doused the flames and prevented the fire from spreading – much to the relief of Boxer who thanked all for their help.
