Vehicle thief dies while making a getaway

Minutes after stealing a bakkie, the driver crashed it, resulting in a fatality

Rakesh Omarpersadh never expected to find strange men stealing his vehicle after he stopped to make a purchase at the Gerry’s Motors convenience store in the early hours of the morning.

He also didn’t expect the criminals to crash his bakkie and for one of them to be killed.

“I popped in to get a box of cigarettes and when I came out, two men were taking off in my vehicle,” recalls Mr Omarpersadh.

His white Isuzu bakkie sped off towards the Loskop road on Sunday morning at about 1.30am.

“The moment I turned around, they were gone. It all happened so fast. I myself am not sure how it all transpired but once they fled, I managed to contact the police. I have no words to explain how I feel, but as a businessperson and parent, it is very hard without your vehicle,” shared Mr Omarpersadh.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed that one of the thieves, who was driving, lost control of the vehicle, which then overturned.

“Officers from the Estcourt Visible Policing Unit attended to a crash scene on the Loskop road. A deceased male was discovered at the scene. The deceased has not yet been identified,” explained Warrant Officer Khan.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by Estcourt detectives.
