Commenting on the prevalence of vandalism affecting the museum, Mr Eksteen said this was the first incident of this kind in about a decade.

“I think the church and museum are soft targets. The problem is, if we fix the window now, will it be broken tomorrow?”

The church suffered far greater damages, with the majority of its windows shattered by stones, leaving the hall a mess of broken glass.

Damages reportedly run into the tens of thousands of Rand.
