NEWCASTLE – When the Angling Professional League (APL) was launched, officials and members had no idea the competition it would bring.

The season was closely contested, with internal competition between members and clubs.

After six rounds of league action, Breakwaters was crowned the VME League champion, facing the next hurdle of the Transnat Knock Out Final against the mighty Challengers.

This took place at Richgate Park in May.

Challengers displayed determination and grit, to topple Breakwaters by a solitary point, setting up the perfect scenario for the Grand Challenge.

Breakwaters settled the score there, with a 49-35 point win.

Title holders for Breakwaters and Stillwaters for the past season included Terrence Chetty, for both the heaviest scaled and heaviest non scaled fish.

His 3,65 kilogram carp and 9kg barbel earned him the prize duo.

Uthveer Buduram received accolades for his 1,75kg eel, while Ethan Burger was rewarded for the rare catch of a 625g kurper and was also the Junior Angler of the Year.

Social Outing champions were Roshan Ramphal (scaled) and Sikhander Amod (non scaled).

Shane Mangaroo earned the title of Knock Out Singles champ, Monty Slabbert taking the overall Knock Out crown and the honour of being the highest point scorer.

The Grand Challenge champion was announced as Shakeel Sheik.

Talia Boodhoo received her dues as the female Angler of the Year, and the Senior Angler of the Year was Kidd Rampersadh.

The Knock Out Doubles champions were Kaveer and Ashvir Singh.

But the standout angler was Kaveer alone, who was awarded prizes for catching the most fish, in addition to the League Champion and Angler of the Year crowns.

All these winners will be honoured on July 9 at the War Room.

The club also hosts its annual general meeting on that date, coupled with 25th anniversary celebrations.

“This promises to be a glamorous function, with all the pomp and ceremony traditional to the club,” said APL president, Matthew Shunmugam.

The new season begins on August 1.
