Learning to creatively reuse, reduce and recycle on World Oceans Day

Learners showed off their creative flair when commemorating World Oceans Day

With the aim to raise awareness of the role of the oceans and the importance of conserving and protecting our marine environment, Nestle held a World Oceans Day celebration.

World Oceans Day is a global celebration on June 8. This past Saturday, 18 local high schools were invited to the Nestle Resource Centre. The day began with a parade through Victoria Street – with learners clutching onto posters making their message loud and clear. Back at the resource centre, messages of support were delivered by Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs official Nosipo Mkwae, Councillor Mlotshwa and Mr Nombika who is the Nestle Plant Manager for Coffee.

Then the much anticipated item was next on the programme – the ‘Trashion’ Show. Yes, fashion made with trash. Colourful, stylish and even branded clothing made of recyclable items took to the catwalk.

The audience was in awe as to how stunningly trash can be transformed.

Shoes, hats, jewellery, handbags, suits and elegant dresses were woven with care and creativity. The minds behind the hard work accompanied their models back onto the stage and talked the judges through the choice of trash, the message and why they decided to create the outfit.

Estcourt Secondary designer, Sandiswa Hlongwane said: “The materials I used may seem invaluable but they do have value when you make it useful. To save our environment we have to reuse, reduce and recycle.”

Thereafter learners delivered speeches on World Oceans Day. The moving speeches addressed problems, had solutions as well as research that was carried out.

“The level of creativity I witnessed today is mind-blowing. You guys have set the bar very high for another such competition,” said Slindile Manyathi, Regional Community Development Specialist for Nestle.

The winners walked away with tablets, latest desktop computers and overhead projectors for the school.
As a token of appreciation, each learner received a warm beverage hamper.
