Bowlers come home to roost

Playing in chilly conditions, with the stunning backdrop of the Central Drakensberg mountains, the 12 teams did battle on an excellent playing surface.

NEWCASTLE – The Nest Bowling Club hosted the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls women’s and men’s Fours Play-offs last weekend.

The Newcastle women’s team of Alice Howe, Dorothy Crosbie, Vicky van der Merwe and Lindsay McArthur played excellent bowls throughout the weekend, winning all five of their games to annex the title, ahead of Barbara Baleri’s Klipbank team, which finished as runner-up.

The men’s section proved to be a closer affair, with a number of teams in contention with the last game to play.

In what proved to be the decider, Vryheid’s Phillip Scheepers, John Cross, Henry Klofta and Jan le Roux beat Klipbank’s VJ Singh, Bennie Malan, Clyde Newton and Donovan Fisher in the last game, for the two teams to finish as winner and runner-up respectively.

The first game played between the two Northerns teams, saw Phillip Scheepers’s team beat John Douthwaite, Erich Holm, Colin Broderick and Adrian van der Merwe, to also annex the Northern Zone Fours title, the latter team finishing as runner-up.

This weekend sees the start of the Club men’s and women’s Singles Championships, with entries closing on Friday evening.
