Details regarding the crash have not been released, but police spokesperson Basheer Khan has confirmed that police attended to the incident on the evening of May 24.

“The suspect’s vehicle was found abandoned in the frontage of a business premises. The vehicle has since been impounded,” he said.

Staff at the bank have been asked not to comment on the matter.

Currently, a temporary shutter has replaced the glass front.

An employee from a neighbouring store said that when she arrived at work on Saturday morning, the vehicle had been removed and the scene cleared.

“The front of the bank was blocked off and we heard that a van had driven through the window. No one was really giving any details about what happened,” she said.

The man appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
