During this service, locals are afforded the opportunity to reflect on the impact losing a loved one has had on their life, as well as rekindle memories of that person.

Hospice chairman Anil Sookraj opens the service.

A candle is lit to remember lost loved ones.  The service was held at Hospice House in Beechwood Road on Sunday, where visitors and regular supporters were welcomed by chairman Anil Sookraj, who reminded those present that “we are who we are because of others”.

A reading and songs were also part of the programme, before Ivan Harilal delivered a message entitled ‘Points to help go on with life’.

Ivan Harilal, who delivered a powerful message.

“Sometimes when we lose a loved one, religious leaders and people may say ‘everything will be okay, don’t worry’ but deep down in our hearts, we battle to cope. We need to acknowledge that inner help comes from God and God alone. This is where our true help and true love come from,” said Mr Harilal.

He encouraged everyone present to enjoy life with their loved ones so that when death comes, there are plenty of memories to be cherished. He likened this to an ant collecting crumbs and storing them for rainy days.

“No person is truly alone; those we love echo within us. Let the joys of our loved ones live through us; it will help you cope and go on,” he concluded.

The candle-lighting ceremony followed, where each person lights a candle in memory of a loved one and places it on a stand. It is a solemn and emotional moment for many people.

The Remembrance Service concluded with refreshments and fellowship.
