Councillors diaries cost how much each? You won’t believe it

How much did you pay for your 2018 diary? Compare this what you paid for AbaQulusi's councillors to have their diaries.

ABAQULUSI’S councillors recently received their 2018 diaries, which cost ratepayers nearly R700 each.

Questioned about the steep price of the diaries, mayor, Jerry Sibiya, responded, “I am a man who is always straight. I am not one to dodge an issue. I believe that our procurement section did pay too much and I have requested an internal audit regarding this cost.”

Cllr Sibiya confirmed that DA (Democratic Alliance) council members had attempted to return their diaries to the municipality, saying they could not condone paying so much for diaries when the municipality was struggling financially. Cllr Sibiya, himself, has opted to buy his own diary.

“I have convinced the DA members to keep their diaries as they have already been issued. However, I will do a proper investigation as to why we paid so much. First, I need to establish what specifications were issued and what the market related price is,” said Cllr Sibiya.

Municipal manger, Bonga Ntanzi, said disciplinary action would be taken “if the internal investigation revealed that someone had dropped the ball.”

Mr Ntanzi and Cllr Sibiya are also investigating why the purchase of seven laptops cost the municipality R155 000.
