Bread van driver robbed at gunpoint in Madadeni

Mob justice: Taking matters into their own hands, members of the community severely assaulted two of the suspects before the police arrived.

Brought to book; brazen bandits exposed to the wrath of a raging crowd.

Three men reportedly robbed the driver of a bread delivery vehicle at gunpoint on April 4 at about 1pm.

According to police, the incident occurred near the Kasi tavern in Madadeni Section 4.

With a pistol as his weapon of choice, one of the suspects allegedly demanded the driver hand over his wallet.

Armed with knives, his accomplices entered the vehicle on the passenger side and searched the driver.

Madadeni police claimed the suspects took the victim’s wallet, as well as R600 in cash.

“The suspects were travelling is a silver grey hatchback, [which] was found at the scene,” read a statement issued by Newcastle SAPS.

At the time of the incident, officers from the crime prevention unit were patrolling the area, and were informed of the robbery by members of the community.

Upon arrival at the scene, police found an angry mob of residents viciously assaulting two of the suspects. The perpetrator apparently in possession of the firearm managed to flee the scene before law enforcement arrived.

“The police put their life in danger trying to protect the suspects, who were already badly injured.”

The injured crooks, aged 30 and 33, were arrested and transported to Madadeni Provincial Hospital. One of the suspects received medical attention, and was discharged shortly thereafter.

“The third suspect is still at large. Madadeni SAPS management commend the officers for acting professionally and rescuing the suspects from the angry community.”

Lieutenant Phindile Mabaso of Madadeni’s Corporate Communications Department, advised the community not to take matters into their own hands.

“We all want to squeeze (sic) the crime at Madadeni, but let’s do it correctly,” she concluded.
