President Zuma a ‘no show’ at honorary gala dinner for Joseph Shabalala in Ladysmith

The reason the president could not attend was that he had to make announcements and attend to commitments in Pretoria

President Jacob Zuma was a ‘no show’ at last night’s (March 31) gala dinner to honour Dr Joseph Shabalala at the Indoor Sports Complex.

Legendary lead singer, producer, father, composer and director Dr Joseph Bhekizizwe Shabalala was honoured at the Arts & Culture Department’s inaugural Amagugu Esizwe event. The programme aims to honour legends who have played a significant role in art, culture and sport in KwaZulu-Natal.

Acting KwaZulu-Natal Premier S Zikalala and also MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports & Recreation Mrs BN Sithole-Moloi attended the dinner.

Hype and talk surrounding the event was that President Zuma was going to attend and present the keynote address.

Acting Premier Mr Zikalala spoke at length about the greatness of Joseph Shabalala. During his speech, he made mention that President Jacob Zuma could not attend the function.

The reason the president could not attend was that he had to make announcements and attend to commitments in Pretoria yesterday evening.

There is much talk going around yet again that President Zuma will be in town later today (April 1) for the unveiling of a plaque at the school named after Dr Shabalala.
