VIDEO: Take ‘A Visionary Walk’ with Lucky

‘A Visionary Walk’, makes it possible for Lucky Mhlungu to share valuable coping skills with many more young people than he could ever reach as an educator.

SOUTH African icon, Nelson Mandela, believed that education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

In the face of all of the tragedy he endured in childhood, including the loss of both parents and the total destruction of his family home in a raging fire, Lucky Mhlungu held onto this belief.

It is this belief that would see Lucky emerge, from a life of poverty, with a BCom degree from the University of Zululand and a BEd Honours degree from UNISA.

Teaching matric classes in economics, accounting and maths at Gudu Secondary School, Lucky instinctively shared his passion for education with his pupils by starting ‘Matric Forums’ as a means of tackling common challenges matric pupils faced.

Ten years later, Lucky’s efforts culminated in the publication of a book, ‘A Visionary Walk’, which makes it possible for him to share valuable coping skills with many more young people than he could ever reach as an educator.

“It all began with the ‘Matric Forums’, which I held at Gudu Secondary. We would sit once a week after school and discuss different topics, brainstorming solutions to challenges that faced the youth. I soon realised that the information shared during these group sessions would be useful to other learners as well, and I started to take notes during the forum. At the end of the year, I used my notes to compile a booklet and the learners were so excited about the booklet that I was motivated to do this again the next year,” said Lucky.

“I have since written a number of guides, including, ‘Life Solutions for Learners’, Power of the Mind’, and ‘Partners in Education’, which was meant to encourage the parents in the rural areas to become more involved in their children’s lives. I also began giving motivational talks at the school assembly, and I am now also delivering a motivation talk on Nongoma FM (88.3) every Friday morning at 6.45. My book, ‘A Visionary Walk’, is a compilation of the best life skills advice and coping mechanisms that were gathered over the years.

“My aim is to inspire the youth to have a vision of the life they would like to lead and to walk a path that leads them toward realising that dream. Every young person should know where they would like to see themselves in the future. My book tells you how to prioritise, set targets and how to set limits, so you don’t endanger your chances of realising your goal. It encourages young people to put their education first and not to lose focus.”

The first 100 copies of Lucky’s book have sold out. However, he has made 10 copies available to the Vryheid Herald. In order to win a copy of Lucky’s book, simply tell us what your goal is on whatsapp: 060 986 0731, or leave a comment on the Vryheid Herald Facebook page.
