Malfunctioning waste purification plant causes havoc for Ladysmith residents

Residents have pointed out that the water has turned green in colour and the size of the so-called sewer dam is getting larger by the day

Leonardsville residents have been left with a foul stench in their nostrils for months now due to the non-functional waste purification plant near Matthew’s Farm.

Residents say they have contacted uThukela on numerous occasions and have been told that the problem is due to a transformer and cables having been stolen from the plant.

They say the smell is at its worst in the mornings and the evenings.

Residents of Rangoon Road and Chandu Road have to keep on cutting their grass, as it grows so fast due to sewer water flowing every single day.

Over the months, the sewage has built up from the plant and is now a veritable sewer dam, say Leonardsville residents.

In the area surrounding the plant, residents have pointed out that the water has turned green in colour and the size of the so-called sewer dam is getting larger by the day.

Many people also dump there, thus adding to the sewage problems the area is facing.

The backlog of sewer water is now getting so bad that residents say it’s entering their yards and also their homes.

Residents contacted Cllr Abbas Warasally, who has asked uThukela how they plan to address this huge problem the entire area is facing.

The residents say they can’t continue living like this, as it is a health risk to them and their children. They want the problem to be fixed as soon as possible.
