#FoodPornFriday: 5 of the most nostalgic South African dishes

From samp and beans to a delectable bobotie, we look at some of South Africa's most famous delicacies.

Move over pizzas and burgers – today I want a taste of home!

On a cool day like this, we always feel nostalgic for a steamy plate of home-grown food. The smell of a potjie piping away on a wood fire outside, just like grandfather used to make, encompass some of the best childhood memories.

Feast your eyes on these scrumptious dishes.

1.Potjiekos

Traditionally made in a three-legged pot, potjiekos is a meaty stew with vegetables of your liking, from carrots to baby marrow and even mushrooms. A mix of vegetables work well, because this dish is as versatile as they come. The secret however, is the wood fire, which gives potjiekos the rustic taste only a true South African can appreciate.

2. Bobotie

This meaty dish, topped with a layer of golden egginess, is a Malay-influenced staple. Recipes vary, but usually call for apricot jam, chutney, Worcester sauce, curry powder and a handful of raisins.

3.Bunny Chow

Typically associated with Durban, this dish originated on the sugarcane plantations as a way to transport lunch. This conventional dish is associated with Indian cuisine, as it’s infused with curry powder, a multitude of spices and proper South African flavour. The quintessential bunny chow is traditionally made with mutton curry. However, any curry, especially sugar beans or vegetable curry, can be used.

4. Samp and Beans

A daily staple throughout Africa, this dish is also enjoyed at celebrations. As the samp increases in volume, it is an ideal dish for entertaining larger crowds. A range of different beans can be used; the important element is the samp. A combination with lamb is always a hit!

5. Walkie Talkies

Not the two-way radio that you’re used to! Walkie talkies is a classic dish indigenous to South Africa. For those who may not have had the opportunity to sample this delicacy, it consists of chicken heads and feets. These are either roasted on a braai or made into a stew.
