DIY project turns deadly

Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch also responded swiftly and tracked the perpetrator as he allegedly tried to blend into the crowd, but eventually handed himself over at Vryheid Police Station.

A Saturday morning shopping trip culminated in a life-threatening nightmare for a local man who was stabbed repeatedly following an altercation with a car guard in President Street.

It is believed that the victim, Justus Kilian (73), had gone to TWK to buy grinding discs for a DIY project he was working on. Unable to find what he was looking for, he left the shop and returned to his vehicle.

Sources report that an altercation broke out between a car guard and Mr Kilian at Mr Kilian’s vehicle when the car guard reportedly confronted the 73-year-old while he was retrieving his spare wheel from the front seat of his bakkie. As he turned to place the spare wheel in the bin of the bakkie, he was met with force from the disgruntled car guard.

A struggle ensued and the car guard wrestled the elderly man to the ground where he stabbed him five times in the left shoulder and once inĀ his side.

A source close to the victim states that Mr Kilian was not aware that he had been stabbed until his attacker had fled the scene and he noticed that he had little to no feeling in his arm.

Fortunately, off-duty medic, Renier Botha, was in the area and stepped in and treated the patient for multiple stab wounds until help arrived as, according to KwaZulu Private Ambulance’s emergency medical technicians, Mr Kilian’s injuries were severe enough to have been fatal had they not been attended to promptly.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance carried out further treatment, stabilising the patient and transporting him to hospital.

Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch also responded swiftly and tracked the perpetrator as he allegedly tried to blend into the crowd, but eventually handed himself over at Vryheid Police Station.

Mr Kilian’s condition was reported to be serious but stable following his harrowing ordeal, and the car guardĀ remains in custody as a case of attempted murder is being opened against him.

“The impression one gets is that these car guards seem to think that they own the parking lot and you’re just leasing it from them,” stated a source close to the victim, ” and if you don’t meet their standards when it comes to paying them, they are not above harming you or your vehicle…”
