THREE arrests were made and nearly R1 million worth of counterfeit Nike, Addidas and All Stars shoes were confiscated by Vryheid police during a recent patrol.

Media liaison officer for Vryheid SAPS, Captain Cheryl Venter, said the Vryheid Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and members of the Vryheid SAPS were conducting a routine patrol when they discovered the counterfeit goods.

“Members of RTI and SAPS stopped a white Quantum loaded with goods. On closer inspection, it was discovered that the boxes contained counterfeit items,” said Captain Venter.

Among the confiscated items were 294 pairs of Nike shoes, 1 042 pairs of Addidas shoes, and 327 pairs of All Stars shoes with an estimated street value of R831 500.

“One man and two women were arrested and appeared at the Vryheid Magistrate’s Court. Counterfeit items are a growing concern in our area, especially over the Christmas season. In order to stop the manufacturing and sale of counterfeit goods, we ask the community not to buy from street vendors but from shops. If you find that the name brand is being sold cheaper than it should be, then it is probably a counterfeit item,” advises Captain Venter.

Residents who know of people selling counterfeit items are urged to call 082 548 9397 or 082 555 8032 to report this crime.
