Paddadam Project – ‘Over to you, Vryheid’

“The Paddadam Project Management wishes to announce the closure of the Paddadam North bank to vehicles until such time as we have received enough contributions to cover the wages of a gateman.

DOUG Grewar writes:

“The Paddadam Project Management wishes to announce the closure of the Paddadam North bank to vehicles until such time as we have received enough contributions to cover the wages of a gateman. Residents will still be able to park their cars in the car park and proceed on foot.”

“We have exhausted all our funds and John Kitching and myself have paid the two workers out of our own pockets for the last two weeks. This is in addition to the R5000 that we each donated to get the project started and the many long hours of our time that we have both put into this project together with the other team members.”

“There is enough tidying up work to keep two workers busy for the next two weeks, but the team feels that as an absolute minimum we must have one worker to be present permanently on site every single day to act as toilet cleaner, gateman, and to alert team members to any acts of vandalism or accidents that might occur. One man will work weekdays while another will work weekends.”

“Without such a presence the Paddadam will quickly be vandalised back into the filthy rubbish dump it was three years ago and the team is not prepared to let this happen after all the effort and the more than R500 000 that the community has invested into it.”

“We need R120 per day for 31 days or R3720 per month on an ongoing basis. Is there any business in Vryheid that would be prepared to sponsor this? You could include the worker on your payroll.”

“Individuals can donate to Brigitte Meyer Alston at Premier Bluestar Financial Services next to Sparrow Computers.”

“Maybe when the ALM appoints a new Municipal Manager we might be able to get a grant from them to cover the cost of the gateman but that is not likely to happen for several months.”

“Over the last three years, the Paddadam Project has been completed above and beyond its original targets despite the ‘Doubting Thomases’. We have effectively controlled the noise makers, hooligans and vandals despite all the negative comment that those varmints would wreck the place. It can be done. All it needs is a little bit of financial support. So it is over to you, Vryheid. Please give us your input and suggestions and, of course, your money!”

“If we do get some support we will try to open up on Saturday, November 26, again.”
