Sod-turning ceremony for Colenso’s CS Smelter Park
CS Smelter Park will create more than 8000 direct jobs for the local community during its construction, and more than 12,000 indirect jobs will be created over a five-year period
KZN Premier Willies Mchunu, Leader of Government Business Sihle Zikalala, management of CS Smelter Park and investors from China held a sod-turning ceremony in Colenso on Tuesday, December 6, marking the beginning of the construction of the CS Smelter Park.
CS Smelter Park will be a privately-owned, coal-fired station which will develop in three phases of 300MW each.
Premier Mchunu stated that the new investment will attract direct foreign investment at about R39.1 billion and there is an estimated R30 billion annual contribution towards the province’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
“The CS Smelter Park will create more than 8000 direct jobs for the local community during its construction, and more than 12,000 indirect jobs will be created over a five-year period,” said Mchunu.
He added that this project fits very well with provincial plans, as they want to ensure that energy becomes a tool for the eradication of poverty, inequality and unemployment.
