NOFTA ends year with good cheer

Newcastle Organisation For The Aged (Nofta) hosted its year-end function last Wednesday evening.

Newcastle Organisation For The Aged (Nofta) hosted its year-end function last Wednesday evening.

Nofta chairperson, Rajesh Ramdhaw, said the event was not only to celebrate the end of the year, but also to take stock of obstacles the organisation faced throughout the year, and to celebrate achievements.

Securing funds to maintain the running of the organisation’s service centre was an obstacle. The continuous running of the organisation, catering for the elderly, was an achievement indeed.

“We also rewarded certain members for their contributions,” he said.

Bully Singh, Nofta secretary, said the event would not have been possible without the assistance of his friend, Shainal Sukha from Cape Town.

“We have been friends for 14 years and this is the second time in a row he has sponsored Nofta’s end-year function,” Mr Singh said.

While a sense of festivity was in the air, Mr Ramdhaw said the organisation would be facing serious changes in the year ahead, including an increase in membership fees.

“We are fortunate to have the service centre which we can hire out, and we have generous sponsors,” he said.
