AbaQulusi Mayor to develop infrastructure

The main issues that are currently high on the mayor’s priority list are helping aid the drought situation and working on the town’s long-term financial matters.

NEWLY elected AbaQulusi Municipality Mayor Cllr Martin Mtshali called a media briefing on Thursday last week to discuss his plans to move the town forward.

The Mayor started off by pointing out that despite having a lot of work on his hands due to certain matters that had not been taken care of by previous council, things were not all gloom and doom as the municipality managed to get a positive unqualified audit report for the past financial year.

This means that despite all the issues the municipality faced in the previous financial year, their financial records and statements were fairly and appropriately presented, and in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

With the vision to make Vryheid a prosperous and sustainable economic hub of Zululand, the Mayor is ready to tackle the town’s infrastructure head on.

Among the issues the Mayor will tackle are economic development and poverty eradication, effective delivery of social services, effective planning and infrastructure development; developing effective governance; actively forging strategic partnerships with all stakeholders and many other issues.

The main issues that are currently high on the mayor’s priority list are helping aid the drought situation and working on the town’s long-term financial matters.

The mayor has already written to the Development Bank of Southern Africa requesting their intervention, as there are issues that need immediate attention.

“Although the municipality is currently financially stable, we may need a medium term intervention,” said the Mayor.

Another matter the Mayor will be looking into is the town’s ageing infrastructure. Vryheid was founded in the year 1884 and things such as the roads as well as the pipes and water systems are very old and need renovating.

Although he admitted to being aware of the fact that he may not still be there to see the fruits of his labour as this is a long-term project and he only has five years, Cllr Mtshali is not deterred by this and hopes that whoever comes in after him will take the baton and continue to run with it.
