Double murder leaves Memel residents on edge

Following the recent murder of Charlotte Viviers and Eric Oosthuizen, the Memel community is piecing back together the remnants of its sense of security.

While some claim the image of the town remains untarnished, naysayers believe peace will likely never be restored.

Memel resident, Vusi Thela, was vocal about his support outside the Memel Magistrate’s courthouse, as one of two murder accused took to the stand last month.

In a recent interview with the Newcastle Advertiser, Mr Thela described the small town he calls home as a ‘simple society’.

However, following the recent murders on October 20, he said the community was worried about the impact crime would have on future investments.

“It’s a bad sign stopping investors from spending their money here. Residents need to cooperate with police in reporting any suspicious acts,” he explained.

Mr Thela said Memel faced challenges, just like any other town. However, he emphatically said the town still has lots to offer.

“Our struggle is to create a democratic society, and it is still our vision to see and live in a cohesive town,” he said. “We strive towards maintaining and defending the values of a rainbow nation.”

Taking the good with the bad, Mr Thela said he was certain the second suspect would be brought to book soon.

“The arm of the law is long. I see commitment of police and other crime-opposing stakeholders. Indeed, he will be caught,” he concluded.
