QUICK thinking and keen observation by Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch patrollers led to the recent arrest of a cable thief.

On a routine patrol, on August 18, members of the watch noticed a suspicious vehicle in the industrial area of Vryheid and followed it discreetly until it stopped outside a business near Sasko.

The Neighbourhood Watch crew noticed “something shiny” hidden in a grassy area near the office and investigated, discovering a massive stash of stolen cable. They alerted the allegedly slumbering security guard by banging on the gate, according to Patrol Commander and Operations Manager of Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch, Adriaan Botha.

Further investigation of the area revealed that the office was unlocked and the windows were open and the Neighbourhood Watch crew had fortuitously interrupted a burglary in progress.

The perpetrator, believed to be a contracted cleaner at the company he was burgling, fled in the direction of the RDP houses in the Sasko area, but was blocked off and arrested before he could escape with his haul of stolen cable.
