THREE of Vryheid Rugby Club’s finest were recently selected to play for the Sharks Rural Side at a rugby week in Kimberley.

Mornè Ellis, Juan Booyens and Tiaan Kruger took part in the SA Rugby Central Amateur Provincial Competition, which took place from August 22 to 26 as Scrumhalf, Flyhalf and Hooker respectively.

“It was really an honour to be selected for the team,” said Mornè Ellis, who successfully captained Vryheid Rugby Club through most of the 2016 season. “It’s a big thing for Vryheid Rugby Club to have three players in the side.”

The Sharks Rural Side, formerly known as the Natal Wildebeest Platteland team, played against Griquas, Griquas Rural and eventually went head to head with Free State Rural in the Central Amateur Provincial Competition on August 26, defeating the Free State team, 37 – 20, to win the Plate Finals.

When asked to describe the feeling of being selected to represent Vryheid at that level, Tiaan Kruger responded, “It was once again an unforgettable feeling knowing I’d be representing Vryheid Rugby Club again this year as Hooker for the SA Rugby Central Amateur Provincial Tournament, as I was again the youngest player in my team to compete against players that have been playing at this level for more than five years. That alone inspires and motivates me not to give up on my dreams.”

“I’m very proud and honoured to have played alongside Mornè and Juan,” he continued, “and very grateful that three boys from the Vryheid side were selected. This can only mean one thing for Vryheid Rugby Club – we are going places!”

“I’d just like to thank my coach, Rich Verster, for all the advice and moral support, for pushing me to be the best I can be. I’d also like to thank the rest of the committee and my team mates for all their effort and support,” he concluded. “I’ve always said, ‘There is no ‘I’ in team’ and I know I would never have made it without them.”
