5 arrested in Uthukela Cluster for possession of unlicensed firearms

The arrests were the result of intelligence-driven operations held in the Cluster

Over the weekend (October 28 to 31), police in the Uthukela Cluster arrested five people for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The arrests were the result of intelligence-driven operations held in the Cluster.

On Friday, a 33-year-old man was arrested by the Ladysmith Tactical Response Team (TRT) in C1 Section, Ezakheni, after a 9mm pistol and a round of ammunition were found in his possession.

Then, on Saturday, the Provincial Taxi Task Team arrested a 22-year-old man in the Stulwane area of Bergville after he was found in possession of a 9mm pistol and seven rounds of ammunition.

On Sunday, Ntabamhlophe police arrested a 35-year-old man in the Upper Shayamoya area of Ntabamhlophe after police received a complaint of a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, they found the suspect with an unlicensed pistol.

On Monday, Port Shepstone Public Order Police (POP) arrested a 25-year-old man for possession of a .22 rifle in Umhlumayo. A second suspect, aged 33, was arrested by Durban TRT officers at the same place and time after he was found with a Z88 pistol and two rounds of ammunition.

The five suspects briefly appeared in various courts across the Cluster this week on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“The recent arrests and number of unlicensed firearms recovered in the province is evidence that we will leave no stone unturned. The arrested suspects will be profiled to see if they can be linked to other cases where innocent people were killed in faction fights,” said Major General Bheki Langa (KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner).
