Rietvlei in flames – Here’s why

WATER is currently one of the most precious commodities in Vryheid.

Water leaks of any kind are therefore to be taken quite seriously. It is with this in mind that AfriForum’s Andrè Van Der Walt has been relentless in attacking problems concerning water leaks, specifically, more recently, at Grootgewacht Dam where two leaks were recently discovered.

It had been discovered that water from Grootgewacht Dam had been disappearing at an alarming rate for quite some time and approximately fifty megalitres of precious water had been lost before the repairs were carried out.

A suspected leak in Rietvlei marsh posed a problem as the area was overgrown with bramble and impossible to get to. Working on Fire was approached and assigned the task of executing a controlled burning of the area, enabling those concerned to get a closer look at the situation.

On Tuesday morning, true to his word, Van Der Walt oversaw the burning of the bramble at Rietvlei.

“A big thank you to Working on Fire, NCT, Volker Farms and Quantum Leap,” said Andrè.

The community is still urged to save water wherever possible, as the water supply will not last forever.
