IN February this year, a somewhat controversial headline on the front page of the Vryheid Herald brought to light a rather disturbing issue regarding faeces in the drinking water.

The cause of this disgusting dilemma was a broken pump at Bhekuzulu pump station, caused by a heavy downpour in November last year. The broken pump resulted in sewage flowing into Besterspruit, which in turn flows into Klipfontein. Months went by and the municipality failed to repair the broken pump.

We recently received a report from AfriForum’s Andrè Van Der Walt that the pump station at Bhekuzulu is broken again and sewage is once more flowing into what remains of Klipfontein Dam via Besterspruit.

We requested comment regarding this issue from AbaQulusi Municipality. At the time of going to print, we were informed by the Media Liaison Officer, Arnold Ramodibe that the matter had been addressed to the relevant department and he was awaiting response.

It is most likely, according to Van Der Walt, that the response from the municipality will be that there is no money to fix the pump.
