Two slain in sleepy Memel

Memel was rocked by the horrifying murder of beloved residents, Charlotte Viviers and Eric Oosthuizen early last week

A home just a stone’s throw from Newcastle became the scene of a shocking double murder on last week.

Viv and Charlotte Viviers, as well as one of their family members, Eric Oosthuizen, were attacked at their home in Memel.

Two suspects were reportedly lying in wait for Mr Viviers to return home at about 6pm.

The suspects apparently bound the victims by their hands and feet. Mr Viviers was allegedly tortured for hours; the suspects hoping to strong-arm him into handing over the safe’s keys.

The family’s domestic worker reported for duty on October 21 at about 8.30am, and came across the grisly scene. According to the Memel Rekord, Mrs Viviers’s body was found in the living room. Mr Oosthuizen’s body was later discovered by police in an out- building. It is believed they were strangled to death, as there were no visible injuries on their bodies.

Mr Viviers allegedly sustained stab wounds to his legs, and was burnt with plastic on his stomach.

The suspects fled the scene in Mr Oosthuizen’s bakkie, prompting police to notify the media of the murders. The registration number, make and model of the vehicle were revealed in an effort to track the suspects down. According to police, the bakkie was recovered in Madadeni on October 23. Furthermore, it was reported two firearms and an undisclosed amount of money were stolen during the attack.

“For many years, she was a correspondent for the Newcastle Advertiser. She kept the Newcastle community informed about what was happening just beyond the border. She had a very close relationship with the community, and will be sorely missed,” said, Newcastle Advertiser journalist, Bruce Douglas.

Mr Viviers was transported to hospital after the incident, and is recovering at a family residence. Mrs Viviers and Mr Oosthuizen will be laid to rest in separate funerals on October 31.

No one has been taken into custody for the crime to date. The motive behind the murders is unclear at this stage. However, the case remains subject to police investigations. The Newcastle Advertiser extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victims.
