#VryheidRugbyClub – Vryheid snatches victory in Volksrust

The squad traveled to Volksrust over the weekend to face the home side on their own turf, but plummeting temperatures and an icy wind were not enough to extinguish Vryheid's fighting spirit on the field.

VRYHEID Rugby Club’s first team remains undefeated this season as they edge ever closer to what promises to be an astronomical semi final at home.

The squad traveled to Volksrust over the weekend to face the home side on their own turf, but plummeting temperatures and an icy wind were not enough to extinguish Vryheid’s fighting spirit on the field.

Despite being caught on the back foot in the first twenty minutes of the match, with Volksrust putting up some good phases in their half, good defence from the men in maroon restricted the hosts, who could only put a penalty through the posts.

Vryheid’s first try came from Armand Holzhauzen, who managed to score eleven minutes into the match, a try that was converted by Francois Scheepers for another two points on the board. Juan Booyens and Carl Holzhauzen also scored tries at 21 and 25 minutes respectively, racking up more points for Vryheid’s firsts, followed by super fast Sticks Mbatha who placed the ball over the line twice, both tries being converted by Francois Scheepers.

Lwazi Ndluli was yellow carded at 40 minutes for a professional foul and sent off the field and Volksrust managed to squeeze in a try in the final moments of the first half.

Vryheid rebounded, with Jaco Davel scoring another try for the team seven minutes into the second half, before Volksrust managed to penetrate Vryheid’s defence once more for a go at the try line. Juan Booyens and Armand Holzhauzen managed to invade the tryline once more each, with Francois Scheepers converting Holzhauzen’s try, before Volksrust scored an unconverted try, followed by an unconverted try from Vryheid phenom, Carl Holzhauzen.

Vryheid bagged another victory to add to their running total of wins this season, with the final score reflecting the hard work and dedication from the squad, Vryheid 57 – 18 Volksrust.

Man of the Match for the forwards was Themba Phiri and Armand Holzhauzen for the backs.

“I am very impressed with our players skill and support play on the weekend,” said Head Coach, Rich Verster. “The support play stood out in this match.”

“Armand Holzhauzen showed that he wants to be first choice at wing in next week’s semi final on home soil,” he continued. ” And Themba Phiri disrupted Volksrust’s lineouts brilliantly, stealing almost every ball. Phiri also contributed to making the three biggest tackles of the game.”

Vryheid Rugby Club invites the public to join them and show their support at the semi finals next week. The second team match will start at 1:30pm on June 25 and the first team will take to the field at 3pm.
