THE POTHOLE pandemic in Vryheid is rising incredibly fast and so is its danger..

Arrive Alive previously stated ‘human error as one of the primary causes in 57% of accidents’ but the prevalence and encounters with potholes, which can be categorised as an environmental factor, has also been identified as a risk factor contributing towards accidents.

It seemed that something was being done about the potholes earlier last year when municipal workers could be seen repairing the roads in April, but that was the last of it.

The local Afriforum have decided to take a stand on behalf of the community and call out to the municipality to address this issue. They handed a letter over to the acting municipal manager, Mrs Mnikathi regarding the horrendous state of Vryheid’s roads.

“Numerous complaints from community members, consultations with vehicle repair businesses, and a lay inspection of various roads in Vryheid revealed that numerous roads are in dire need of urgent repairs,” Afriforum said in their letter.

“To prevent further damage to either property or members of the community, and others travelling in and through Vryheid, as well as the property of the municipality (i.e the roads themselves and municipal vehicles travelling on these roads), it is of utmost importance that at least the potholes be repaired in the following roads: 1. Deputasie Street- between Hlobane and Smal Street. 2. President Street- between Kommissie and Smal Street. 3. President Street- between Boeren and Heeren Street, ” they said.

The Afriforum requested AbaQulusi Municipality to commence with the repairing of these roads by May 9.

What some may see as a little glitch in the road could very well leave their wallets feeling the pinch later, especially in cases where vehicles are not insured.

The AbaQulusi Municipality had not responded to the letter at the time of going to print.

Afriforum hopes that the municipality will take heed to their warnings as motorists; cyclists and motorcyclists alike are all at risk when it comes to potholes.
